Couples Counselling for Depression
What is Couples Counselling for Depression (CfD)?: Depression can impact upon relationships by creating feelings of loneliness, distress, anger and sometimes lead to hostile or unhelpful patterns of interaction. CfD can help by focusing upon how you understand each other both in terms of your interactions/practical level and at an emotional level. This relieves depression, creating positive cycles that can re-introduce feelings of closeness in and improve your relationship.
Couples Therapy for Depression helps you to understand yourself and your partner better. It can help support you to deal with both the depression and the distress it causes – and help you get back to a feeling of closeness.
What can Couples Counselling help with?
How depression affects both of you in your relationship
Understanding your own and your partners emotional and practical needs
What makes your relationship less satisfying than it could be
Recovering from depression – by reducing the things that make partners feel alone and cause conflict and distress
Building a better sense of closeness with your partner
Breaking patterns of behaviours that cause conflict
Feelings of anxiety and stress in facing the challenges of your relationship and family life
Adjusting to life changes such as the arrival of children, bereavement or separation
Finding greater confidence about the future
Improving your sexual relationship if needed.
Your Therapist: Will be impartial but understanding. Although, the process of therapy can feel challenging, your therapist, will not take sides, will listen to you without judgment and help you explore your thoughts and emotions. They may offer information, but they won’t tell you what you should think or do. They will help you find your own solutions.
As everyone’s treatment can vary to some degree, your therapist will help you explore how depression is impacting upon both of you, discuss better ways of communicating, helping you to break out of repeating patterns of unhappiness in your relationships and a more stable family life.
How often?: Dependent upon the symptoms you have been experiencing, treatment can on average last for between 12 to 16 sessions, with each session lasting 50 mins.
Where?: CfD can be offered either in person (face to face) or remotely (video)
